Every year at this time, I choose a theme song for the upcoming year that I play to remind me of the positive moments in life. I then play that song when I am feeling disheartened or facing an uncomfortable situation in life I have to make a decision about. I also choose a motto for the year.
This year, my theme song is now running three years strong, Janet Jackson's 'Enjoy', which I first heard while on vacation in Miami Beach, FL in the winter of 2019. I was in what I thought was my last semester at Boise State, so my vacation was filled with work as well. I found the song while doing research for my last paper, and fell in love with it. It speaks to my heart as it reminds me to enjoy the simple things in life, and to always realize that the journey of life is the greatest adventure of all!
My motto is '65 and Still Alive!', and I am entering the arena of my life where I believe the wisdom of living through difficult times as well as easy times brings balance and perspective to one's existence.
This time of year is an interesting time of year. Winter brings a quietness to us, and is a great time to go within and reflect on what worked for you in the last year, and what didn't. This weekend is my 'visioning' weekend, and my time to reposition and pivot, if necessary. My time to take inventory of where I am at and where I would like to be next year at this time.
Of course, I have lived long enough to know that I can make all the plans I want, set goals, etc. and if I don't give wiggle room for God's existence and direction in my life, and I am in a concrete mindset as opposed to a fluid mindset, I may miss out on the little miracles of everyday life.
I went out to celebrate the New Year early last night with some friends to listen to one of my favorite bands in the Treasure Valley area. Another friend showed up, someone I see only when I go out dancing, and he said to me, "I think it's kinda cute how at this time of year we think things will be different." That struck a chord in me, because change is very hard to make, and most of us don't like it.
However, change is what truly makes us grow because we have to face fear and move through it. The only way I truly know how to face fear after 65 years on this planet is to take it by the hand and walk through that fear with faith. Faith in the unknown, faith that the choices I make will be the right choices for me, and to remember that above all else, making certain I take care of myself and living out my life is truly the most important thing I can do, for I do believe that God's gift is life, and what we do with that gift is what we give back to God.
On that note, I would like to share something a friend of mine posted on social media.
Perhaps it will help you to start off your new year with flying colors!
